About the course

This course is designed for intermediate (B1/B2 or Entry Level 3/Level 1) students who are intending to apply to study at a UK university, and who have a good knowledge of intermediate (or above) English grammar. It assumes that participants have a reasonable competence in all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and now need to develop these specifically for academic purposes.
 
You must be 19 years of age or older to attend this course.

    Week 1: Big city problems (reading, vocabulary)

    • Developing an awareness of big city problems; finding main ideas and supporting details in texts; learning new vocabulary to talk about cities and the environment.
    • Vocabulary (Exploring idioms) 

    Week 2: The food revolution (listening and vocabulary) 

    • Developing an awareness of the food revolution in the 21st century; learning new vocabulary to talk about food; developing the ability to hear main ideas and supporting details in videos and audio materials. 
    • Speaking part 2 (Cooking and Eating) 

    Week 3: Collaboration and teamwork skills (listening) 

    • Developing an awareness of collaboration, teamwork and their importance; engaging in a practical teamwork activity and reflecting on one’s own performance in it.
    • Reading (Becoming a writer) 

    Week 4: Writing:Paragraph development 

    • Developing an awareness of paragraph development in English; writing a paragraph following the conventions of English academic writing.
    • Speaking (Expressing Opinions) 

    Week 5: Crowdfunding (reading and vocabulary) 

    • Developing an awareness of crowdfunding, a new business model and the entrepreneurial literacy of the 21st century; learning new vocabulary to talk about crowdfunding and entrepreneurship; understanding reference words in texts.
    • Listening (Starting a New College Course) 

    Week 6: A Job without a boss (listening, speaking) 

    • Hierarchy in the workplace (practising listening for details and fluency in speaking). 
    • Reading and speaking (Work Exchange) 

    Week 7: Initiative as a 21st century skill (speaking, teamwork) 

    • Developing an awareness of initiative and its importance, and engaging in a hands-on initiative activity and reflecting on your own performance in it.
    • Speaking part 2-3 (Inventions) 

    Week 8: Definition paragraphs (writing) 

    • Developing an awareness of definition paragraphs in English and writing a definition paragraph following the conventions of English academic writing.
    • Listening (Sustainable housing) 

    Week 9:  

    • Nouns 1 and 2 (special omissions of the definite article)
    • Writing (The Golden Years) 

    Week 10: 

    • Last Goodbyes to Internet Explorer (speaking)
    • Vocabulary (Generation X,Y,Z) 
  • Skills acquired

    By the end of the course, learners will:

    • Speak more fluently and accurately, using a wide range of relevant vocabulary.

    • Write more confidently, using paragraphs appropriately.

    • Listen in a range of different ways according to your purpose.

    • Read more rapidly, using techniques to enable you to achieve your goals.

    • Collaborate and engage more effectively with your peers. 

    • Appropriately use your initiative in an academic context.
